Abstract

ESCOBAR, Mariela Alejandra. The problem of temporalities in Reinaldo Arena's Pentagonía. CELEHIS [online]. 2019, n.37, pp.1-5. ISSN 2313-9463.

"Pentagonía" is a neologism adopted by Reinaldo Arenas to refer to the series of five novels that tells, in an unusual way, the life of a character and the historical circumstances that surrounds him. This character dies in each novel and reappears in the following one with another name, however, there are certain elements that shows that he is the same character but in another period of his life. This series is composed of Celestino antes del alba, El palacio de las blanquísimas mofetas, Otra vez el mar, El color del verano y El asalto. Time is one of the factors which allows the reading of these five novels as one and it reinforces the autobiographical gesture. The time conceptions that are manifest in these stories will be analyzed in this article. These conceptions intertwine linear time with circularity, even with a subjective time that stops time itself within an instant.

Keywords : Reinaldo Arenas; Cuba; linear time; circular time; instant..
