Abstract

VERGARA, Valentín Héctor. The soldier's charges: The intellectual course of UlricoSchmidl's work from the 19th century to the early 20th century. CELEHIS [online]. 2020, n.39, pp.71-80. ISSN 2313-9463.

UlricoSchmidl's work has been considered during half the nineteenth century as the main source to get to know the events that took place along the first years of the Spanish colonization in the Río de la Plata. This text will analyse which were the objections of Argentina's intellectual criticism towards his work and the different criteria adopted to accept or reject the contributions made by the German soldier. In order to fulfill this goal, the editions made by Pedro de Ángelis, Mariano Pelliza and Samuel LafoneQuevedo will be studied and also how their circulation crucially modified the esteem in which the intellectual field held Schmidl's work; critical studies of his work that show the quarrels towards it among colonial studies will also be taken into account.

Keywords : UlricoSchmidl; XVI century; colonial literature; travel chronicles; Argentinean history.
