Abstract
CRIACH, Sofía. ¿Is Aballay a gaucho? Antonio Di Benedetto and his writing of the margins. CELEHIS [online]. 2021, n.41, pp.21-30. ISSN 2313-9463.
For decades, in discussions about the constitution of Argentine literature's map and in its work's reviews, the tension between region and nation has often emerged. In the case of the famous short story “Aballay”, by Antonio Di Benedetto, this question plays an important role concerning “pampa” and “gaucho”, foundational components of our belles lettres. Nevertheless, from our regional locus (Heredia, 2007) we propose an approach that escape the reading from gaucho tradition, in order to investigate how the author is located in literary canon from the borders, not only by the choices during his lifetime -residence in native town and firm refusal to settle in Buenos Aires-, but also because of the presence of margins in his narrative work as a poetics essential trait. We try to expose how Di Benedetto, with this text, deregionalizes or derealizes the regional space by deepening its symbolic thickness, turning it into a place of displacement of meanings, tension between recognition and estrangement, oblique and elusive dialogues with tradition.
Keywords : Antonio Di Benedetto; Argentine literature; gaucho tradition; desert; margins.
