Abstract

GUERRA, Juan José. Between shopping and mud: the folds of the dual city in Fogwill'sVivirafuera. CELEHIS [online]. 2022, n.43, pp.51-60. ISSN 2313-9463.

This article aims to analyze the construction of urban space in Vivirafuera (1998), by Fogwill. We start from the verification that the novel shows the primacy of “flows” over “places” (Mongin 2006) as a constitutive experience of the contemporary city. In this sense, the circulation between residential areas, business sectors and impoverished urban periphery reveals in Vivirafuera a social fragmentation that manifests itself territorially in the distribution of inequality. By revealing through the different trajectories of the characters the coexistence of spaces of wealth and extreme poverty, the novel exhibits the lights and shadows of modernization once it has been consummated.

Keywords : Fogwill; urban space; modernization; territory; contemporary Argentine literature.
