Abstract

SALEM, Leila. EL ORIENTALISMO EN TENSIóN: LECTURAS SOBRE EGIPTO EN LOS RELATOS DE VIAJE A FINALES DEL SIGLO XIX EN ARGENTINA. Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2018, vol.53, n.2, pp.39-82. ISSN 2314-1549.

The work aims to analyze the stories of travel to Egypt of the men of the generation of '80. Men like Lucio Mansilla, Pastor S. Obligado, Juan Llerena, Darro Rocha, Luis Angel Viglione and Eduardo Wilde began the journey to Egyptian lands from the middle of the 19th century. The study of correspondence, periodicals and travel books will allow us to understand the different readings and interpretations that the texts transmit about Egypt. Although the interpretative frameworks of positivism, progress and rationality were imposed, some of the interpretations about Egypt deviated, nuanced or contradicted the intellectual parameters of the late nineteenth century. His analysis will allow to understand the particular characteristics that Orientalism acquired in the fin-de-siècle Argentina.

Keywords : Orientalism; travel books; Egypt; XIX century.
