Abstract

RIQUELME GALVEZ, Oscar. AFTER THE BATTLE OF MAIPU: Americanist Symbology, Urban Planning, and Baroque Heritage in the Plains of Maipú between 1818-1823. Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2019, vol.54, n.2, pp.41-62. ISSN 2314-1549.

In the middle of the War of Independence in Chile, the Battle of Maipú (April 5, 1818) became the cause for authorities of the regime to promote decrees to invent symbolic expressions in the desolate lands of the southwestern Santiago. These expressions, representative of certain ideologies, in a period of less than three years mutated into an urban planning project that was quickly truncated with the abdication of Bernardo O’Higgins.

Keywords : Maipú; Material and immaterial symbology; Urban planification; Conceived and absolute space; Village-convent.
