Abstract

GUILLAMON, Guillermina. BETWEEN THE HOBBIES AND MUSICAL OFFICES: Use, appropriation and circulation of pianos in Buenos Aires (1820-1840). Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2020, vol.55, n.1, pp.91-114. ISSN 2314-1549.

The objective of the article is to analyze the logical or dynamic of use that gave value to musical instruments in Buenos Aires from 1820-1840, analyzing a dimension that has been little worked in studies on culture, taste and music. Through the analysis of judicial files, it is analyzed how in the development of daily practices the pianos acquired social and symbolic values that, while complementing their economic value, many times enhanced it. Addressing what we call “materiality of music” thus allows us to identify an emerging network of fans and crafts related to music, as a constitutive part - albeit difficult to grasp - of the Buenos Aires music scene. Finally, we seek to complement an approach that, until now, has had as its main analytical axis the public music scene, specifically the Provisional Coliseum Theater.

Keywords : Culture; Musical instrument; Buenos Aires society.
