Abstract

BELINI, Claudio. THE FIRST RECESSION. THE TEXTILE CRISIS OF 1938 AND ARGENTINA'S ECONOMIC POLICY IN THE EARLY 1940s. Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2020, vol.55, n.1, pp.187-222. ISSN 2314-1549.

After a decade of leadership in manufacturing growth, the textile industry plunged into a first recession in 1938. This situation placed the sector at the centre of the debate among the main economic actors on its origins and possible solutions. This article aims to analyze the impact of the crisis and the disputes between the government, the Parliament and the main business organizations. Based on scarcely explored sources, the article reconstructs the strategies of economic actors in the face of the crisis and its impact on the economic policies of the late 1930s and early 1940s. The study of this episode of crisis aims to contribute to a wider discussion of the dynamics of Import Substitution Industrialization (ISI) in Argentine
