Abstract

VEGA Y ORTEGA BAEZ, Rodrigo Antonio. “An imaginary traveler”. Botany and Zoology in Scientific conferences to the children of Julio Sixto Hernández (Mexico, 1899). Rev. hist. am. argent. [online]. 2021, vol.56, n.2, pp.77-103.  Epub Dec 18, 2021. ISSN 2314-1549.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48162/rev.44.012.

The objective of the article is to approach the themes and popularizing strategies of science that the mexican professor Julio S. Hernández captured in scientific conferences to the children as part of his interest in promoting children's reading. The relevance is found both in the scarce historical research on the work of professor Hernández and the small number of studies on the scientific popularization directed at children during the mexican nineteenth century. The methodology is based on the analysis of the lectures from the social history of science, by valuing them as part of the mexican scientific culture aimed at popularizing specialized knowledge at the end of the Porfiriato. The history of the mexican scientific popularization in the Porfiriato is a subject with few studies despite the large number of books, magazines, brochures, among other sources; and in Hernández's written work, especially the books, it is well known that the popularization of science was part of his intellectual project in terms of educating children inside and outside the classroom, as well as generating pedagogical materials for parents and teachers to homeschool.
