Coffee activity was in large measure responsible for the integration of Minas Gerais to world trade. The production of rubiacea was concentrated in the Zona da Mata region, previously identified as undeveloped hinterland, which in less than half century became one of the main coffee-producing areas of the world. Thus, Juiz de Fora developed as an urban center, focusing on credit services, marketing and product transportation, activities which gave a new impetus to the local economy.
