Abstract
SOUX, María Luisa. Más allá de la historia patria: las fronteras construidas y el proceso de independencia en Charcas. Travesía (San Miguel de Tucumán) [online]. 2016, vol.18, n.2, pp.35-51. ISSN 2314-2707.
To approach Hispano-American independences with the same focuses used to study the nations which arose as a result of this process, involving an erroneous territorial base, makes it difficult to understand the complexity of the process. In Bolivia, this imaginary distorts the relation existing between Charcas or Alto Peru and the capitals of the viceroyalties of Peru and the River Plate, by suposing that the war for independence was a struggle against the metropolis, instead ofa "proto-national" fight against the royal armies of Peru and the auxiliary armies of the River Plate. This paper proposes that it was a face-off between vice-royal capitals in an intermediate territory, in which the altoperuano patriots became part of the River Plate project, while royalists joined the vice-royal Peruvian project. From such a perspective the participation of creole caudillos and of Indians who were part of the River Plate army is analized, by means of the roles played by two of their chiefs, Arenales and Warnes, who led the Altoperuvian insurgency between 1813 and 1816.
