In order to identify what were the information gathering and dissemination practices in Europe about the Paraguayan War (1864-1870), we analyze the contacts that the belligerent governments established with newspapers, magazines and European news agencies. In order to understand the framework of political and economic interests that linked the South American diplomatic agents of both sides with the various editors and newspapers from Europe, in this article we analyze the negotiations that took place “behind the news”. With this purpose, we study what were the practices followed by diplomats to obtain presence in the press and to convince reporters to endorse their respective cause.
