Abstract

PANTOJA, María Claudia. Press and visual culture: identity, graphic design and photographs in Tucuman’s guides and almanacs, 1880-1920. Travesía (San Miguel de Tucumán) [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.1, pp.79-107. ISSN 2314-2707.

Towards the end of the 19th century printed objects were present in different aspects of everyday life and, in that regard, guides and almanacs were an auxiliary to daily activities, a time and space organizer, but also creators of imaginaries and subjectivities. This article aims to analyze Tucumán’s guides and almanacs published between 1880 and 1920 through its texts, photographs and graphic design in search of repeating topics that might have help determine a local identity. We will argue that guides and almanacs were tools for the creation and reproduction of symbolic universes linked to widely spread ideas in the end of nineteenth century Western societies, such as faith in progress and modernity. Likewise, these peculiar printed objects were also producers and reproducers of topics tied to local history and its landscape.
