Abstract
BARROS MEIRA, Roberta; GARCIA BOLDORINI, Marília and NEIS CARELLI, Mariluci. Thorns and flowers: the weaving of an agrarian landscape in Lima Barreto’s narrative. Travesía (San Miguel de Tucumán) [online]. 2021, vol.23, n.1, pp.33-52. ISSN 2314-2707.
This text analyzes Lima Barreto’s ideas on agriculture in the novel Triste fim de Policarpo Quaresma. The narrative of one of the main writers of the First Republic offers the possibility of discussing the strengthening of agronomic sciences and their impact on an essentially agricultural country. By bringing together Literature and History, we have the opportunity of accompanying little-studied actors and the social inequalities which dominated the Brazilian agrarian landscape. Lima Barreto’s critical view allows us to perceive the trajectories followed by Brazilian agrarian society in the complex process of remodelling well-established landscapes.
