Abstract

BARRETO, Luis Maximiliano. Conceptualizing recent Argentine-US relations in the field of security and defense. A relationship of elective affinities?. Relac. int. [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.55, pp.165-176. ISSN 2314-2766.

The aim of this article is to study a recurrent hypothesis within a particular field of studies about security and defense in Latin America, limiting the approach to the Ar- gentine case under Mauricio Macri’s administration (since his taking office until March 2018) Even though the hypothesis is outlined at various levels by the authors, it is usually argued that the United States tends to be an actor that pursues the involvement of the appertaining Latin American Armed Forces in internal conflict hypotheses. This statement strikes a contrast with the position in Washington related to its own military, which has not been authorized to solve domestic issues mainly since the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. In this respect, testing the aforementioned hypothesis in connection with Argenti- na involves addressing the difference between “internal security” and “national de-fense”, which has had special significance since the late 1980's, when both of which began to be built as differentiated fields.
