Abstract

VILLAMIL PARRA, Wilder Andrés  and  HERNANDEZ, Edgar Debray. LEVEL OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN PATIENTS WITH RENAL FAILURE PARTICIPATING IN A PERITONEAL DIALYSIS PROGRAM. Rev. nefrol. dial. traspl. [online]. 2018, vol.38, n.1, pp.28-34. ISSN 2346-8548.

Introduction: Renal disorders have become one of the main non-communicable diseases having a major impact on society; they can affect anybody despite their ethnic group, gender, age or socioeconomic status. Nowadays, they are becoming a greater cause of morbidity and mortality with a growing impact on 10% of the world population. Objectives: To establish the amount of physical activity and life quality in patients suffering kidney failure. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted. The variables analyzed were amount of physical activity and life quality. The participants were 81 patients diagnosed with renal failure who were treated at the Hospital Militar Central and enrolled in the Peritoneal Dialysis Program. Results: A small amount of physical activity, i.e. less than 600 m/min per week or 3 days of physical activity for a period of 20 minutes or less, is observed in 71% of the population. Some of them (11.1%) do a moderate amount of physical activity (more than 600 m/min per week or 3 days of moderate physical activity for a period of more than 20 minutes); only 1.2% of the population practices a great amount of physical activity (more than 1,500 m/min per week). Conclusions: People suffering from kidney failure practice a small amount of physical activity due to their chronic disease or their health status, which increases the risk of cardiac, metabolic and musculoskeletal comorbidities.

Keywords : motor activity; physical activity; chronic renal failure; peritoneal dialysis.
