Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of chronic kidney disease and renal function replacement worldwide without exception, due to the accelerated deterioration in renal function suffered by patients who stay away from the goals of metabolic control in diabetes , as well as, the associated comorbidities that contribute as additional factors of progression, causing an inevitable fall in the glomerular filtration rate with the subsequent dialysis therapy. Considering that currently there are no preventive nephrology interventions focused on diabetes, we present the results of a program carried out in the first-time care of these patients at the General Hospital Guillermo Álvarez Macías , Tula de Allende, Hidalgo, México. Objective: Early detection of diabetic nephropathy; Materials and methods: Cross-sectional retrospective descriptive study, by analysis of renal function tests, including the 24-hour albuminuria study, an intentional search for abnormal findings was carried out; The data was analyzed using the statistical package SPSS version 15 for Windows. Results: It was possible to detect diabetic nephropathy in 61% of the population against 30% by means of techniques traditionally used in the general consultation of diabetic patients. Persistent hyperglycemia was found to be the main factor associated with the development of nephropathy, with the prolonged suboptimal control level constituting the common denominator that differentiates them from the population without diabetic nephropathy (p 0.002). Conclusions: Considering that diabetic nephropathy is a preventable disease, it is easy to detect when carrying out an adequate screening at the first and second level of care, which allows its timely reference to the specialist in nephrology for its support in the treatment.
