Abstract

SHMIDT, Claudia. The impossible coexistence: a capital city for two states: Buenos Aires (1880-1888). An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2011, vol.41, n.1, pp.27-36. ISSN 2362-2024.

The definition of the city of Buenos Aires as the capital of the Republic was the outcome of a process of seven decades of conflict. Its consolidation in 1880, after the assumption to the presidency of Julio A. Roca, brought the impossibility of housing both the national government and the foregoing provincial one, situation solved with the expansión of the federal territory and its definitive federalization, with the following creation of an ex-novo city, La Plata to be the provincial capital. Reviewing some of the events surrounding the capitalization of Buenos Aires, arise new questions from the point of view of material transformations, and helps to disclose a subtle web of benchmarks, specific and measurable, that intertwines with a more sophisticated yet scattered one in the various intricacies of the urban cultura and politics.

Keywords : Buenos Aires; Provisional capital; Federal District.
