Abstract

TORRENT, Horacio. Historiography and Modern Architecture in Chile: notes on its paradigms and challenges. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2012, vol.42, n.1, pp.55-76. ISSN 2362-2024.

This text examines the development of the historiography of Chilean architecture and its main paradigms reviewing the corpus of texts produced in the history of architecture and urbanism. It addresses the initiation in relation to colonial architecture with the ideas of style and influence, and the operational interest to heritage conservation. It sets the moment of introduction of the canonical criteria of modern architecture through the architectural periodicals, and verifies the postmodern critiques that promoted the historical knowledge in relation with the theory of architecture. It analyzes the comprehensive histories of modern architecture and their main arguments and historiographic schemes. It exposes the current developments and research characterized by greater breadth of topics and argues for new historiography trends that abandon the notion of influence and emphasize the documentary resources and new critical approaches.

Keywords : Architecture; Urbanism; Historiography; Modern architecture; Chile.
