Abstract

RANCIER, Omar. Trujillo and the city, civitas diaboli: the embodied city. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2012, vol.42, n.2, pp.113-120. ISSN 2362-2024.

Rafael Trujillo, a product of the American intervention in the Dominican Republic in 1916, takes over the power in 1930 and after 15 days, the city of Santo Domingo is destroyed by the cyclone of San Zenón, a situation exploited by Trujillo so that the reconstruction of the city would consolidate himself as a governor. In 1936, he renamed Ciudad Trujillo the city of Santo Domingo, which had had that name for four centuries. This was only one of the strategies of resemantization that would allow him to consolidate power and embody the city and the Dominican territory, as he managed to do for 31 years.

Keywords : Trujillo; Strategies; Resemantization; Power.
