Abstract

CARMONA, Liliana. Montevideo architectural heritage: phases towards debate in the public sphere (1980-2012). An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2012, vol.42, n.2, pp.155-178. ISSN 2362-2024.

This paper relates to the research "Observatory and critique: issues of architectural culture in the public realm", aimed to identify disciplinary debates of public interest in Uruguay, and to reflect critically in the aggregate of conceptual density. Observations in the last decade reveal two simultaneous situations: the interventions in the architectural heritage as a persistent theme in debates and the extension of the discussions to the fields of digital support, enabling more participation and a wider scope for the discussion. This paper analyzes action on architectural heritage since the 1980s up to polemical current interventions. The rehabilitation of urban landmarks, bad taste, building grafting, structural collapse, demolition and lack of building codes are issues that become present in the media and call into question from various areas -academic, political, cultural spaces, citizenship, etc.- management decisions taken by competent authorities.

Keywords : Architectural heritage; Intervention; Debate; Public sphere; Media.
