Abstract

NOVICK, Alicia; FAVELUKES, Graciela  and  VECSLIR, Lorena. Maps, plans, and sketches in the construction of Greater Buenos Aires. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2015, vol.45, n.1, pp.55-72. ISSN 2362-2024.

Throughout the 20th and the early 21st century, the extension of what became Greater Buenos Aires was subject to diverse graphic representations, from detailed topographical maps to schematic proposals. What relationships existed between the maps and diagrams of the urban plans proposed for the Metropolitan Area of    Buenos Aires in that period? As we put it, the tensions between the existing city -such as presented in the general cartographies- and the projected city , which results from the interpretative and schematic proposals, show that the images, defined by transforming technologies, debates, and methods of transformation, construct ways of seeing. To address this issue, attempting neither a long-term history nor a brief summary, this paper proposes an exploration of four turning points that we consider illustrative of the process of the visual formulation of Greater Buenos Aires.

Keywords : Greater Buenos Aires; metropolitan cartography; urban planning; urban history; graphic representations.
