Abstract

KACZAN, Gisela  and  ZUPPA, Graciela. Looks, strategies, exhibitions: Representation of bodies in the visual culture, circa 1920-1940. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2015, vol.45, n.1, pp.101-118. ISSN 2362-2024.

This article integrates visual studies, the variants of representation, and the new ways of approaching cultural history, to interpret practices and scenes from the coasts of southeast Buenos Aires, Argentina, around the first decades of the 20th century. The corpus of the images has diverse thematic cores, among which are found links with advertising and propaganda, in order to recognize the modalities that are adopted by the symbolization of the body while at the beach, announcements, brochures, and posters are used as a visual entry to the social field. The main objective is to understand that the reading of the visual cultural allows the tracing of the conventions and tensions between feminity and masculinity imaginaries, in a time with strong modifications in gender issues.

Keywords : visual studies; cultural history; space; body; image.
