Abstract

COITICHER, Nora. An urban scene of international worker's day: Document, archive, narration. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2015, vol.45, n.2, pp.197-214. ISSN 2362-2024.

Starting with the analysis of a series of photographs taken during different celebrations of International Worker's Day in Buenos Aires belonging to the archives of the Department of Photographic Documents of the Public Record Office (Archivo General de la Nación), this paper presents some thoughts on the status of the image in historical research. At the same time, it exposes the particularities that the experience of working in image archives entails, which are not only direct documentary sources, but also harbor unexpected information and trigger various kinds of questions. Deepening the analysis on one photograph of an anarchist demonstration of 1909, we will propose some answers to the question: What does the image document, besides its own material history? This enables other questions concerning the interpretation, narration, and valid sources to generate historical knowledge.

Keywords : photography; anarchism; demonstrations in urban space; documentary archives.
