Abstract

MORALES TEJEDA, Aida Liliana. Santiago de Cuba: urban views and images in the stories of travelers. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2016, vol.46, n.1, pp.91-102. ISSN 2362-2024.

During the 19th century, a group of foreign travelers, mainly European, left their vision of the city of Santiago de Cuba. Each one bequeathed a narrative testimony of enormous value for the knowledge of this city, especially its architecture and urbanism. The view of these artists scrutinizes the singularities of the urban landscape of Santiago: its main public spaces. This article values the vision of the city of Santiago de Cuba, especially its architecture and urbanism, that several travelers who visited it throughout the 19th century left. Their judgments lead us to appreciate certain aspects that are typical of the city and to find in the eyes of others what makes us different.

Keywords : travel literature; travelers; imaginaries; cities.
