Abstract

BOOTH, Rodrigo  and  VALDES, Catalina. From nature to landscape: The travels of Francisco Vidal Gormaz in the visual colonization of southern Chile in the 19th Century. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2016, vol.46, n.2, pp.199-216. ISSN 2362-2024.

This paper explores the visual colonization of southern Chile during the process of expansion of the nation towards the province of Llanquihue in the second half of the 19th century. We particularly focus on how landscape is configured in the work of the traveler Francisco Vidal Gormaz, an important explorer, soldier, writer, illustrator and cartographer who, along with his team, participated in this process of occupation of domestic territory. Vidal Gormaz's expedition contributed to changing the perception of the Llanquihue region, initially considered wild and unknown, aesthetically linked to the notion of "the sublime", and later transformed into a landscape that was beginning to be understood as beautiful.

Keywords : journey; landscape; southern Chile; military explorations; image.
