Abstract

SOLDANO, Daniela  and  PERRET MARINO, Gimena. The other conurbano: experiences and sociabilities of the middle classes in the formation of three towns in western Great Buenos Aires, 1940-1960. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2017, vol.47, n.1, pp.125-146. ISSN 2362-2024.

The towns of the conurbano (the Greater Buenos Aires or GBA) reveal social, economic, and urban landscapes that are highly diverse and contrasting -variety and contrasts which are hardly exceptional but rather constitute a structural trait of these suburban areas. With its focus on the workers which originally populated the industrial belt of the GBA, the main research agenda so far has shadowed what this article refers to as "the other conurbano" -that of the middle classes and their encounters with other social actors. In this paper, we propose to reconstruct part of that history, through a study of the formation of three towns of the first belt of the GBA: Ciudad Jardín, and Martín Coronado, located in the district of San Martín, and El Palomar, which belongs to Morón.

Keywords : greater Buenos Aires; urban experiences; sociabilities; middle classes.
