Abstract

TOMMEI, Constanza Inés. Earth architecture of Quebrada de Humahuaca: Interpretations, descriptions and categories throughout the 20th and 21th centuries. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2018, vol.48, n.1, pp.47-63. ISSN 2362-2024.

What types of architectures exist in Quebrada de Humahuaca? This question, that implies which ones are supposed to be built nowadays, was formulated several times throughout the 19th and 21th centuries. The aim of this paper is to review the changing representations accomplished about the architectural artifacts of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, within which the adobe was of great importance. These descriptions gained more interest when the Quebrada de Humahuaca was declared as a World Heritage Site (2003); at that time, both the objects valued and those that were not considered as goods to be protected, were identified. For this purpose, two theoretical-methodological strategies were used. On the one hand, studies on the constructions of the region were developed, identifying the production context, its authors and which questions they were answering. On the other hand, the material, morphological, technical and typological characteristics of this architecture were identified.
