Abstract

SNITCOFSKY, Valeria. Reconstruction and analysis on the first “villa” of Buenos Aires (1932-1935). An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2023, vol.53, n.1, pp.10-10. ISSN 2362-2024.

Narratives about the origins of urban informality in Argentina tend to establish a diffuse starting point, located sometime between the 1940s and 1950s, when internal migrations overwhelmed the main cities and the issue assumed greater visibility. However, the first precarious neighborhood known in the country as a “villa” arose around the port area of Buenos Aires during the Great Depression and was inhabited mainly by immigrants of European origin. With the aim of providing precision to traditional periodizations and enriching the historical analysis of the informal city, this article systematizes and critically analyzes various sources on an urban space whose brief existence took place between 1932 and 1935.

Keywords : Buenos Aires; urban informality; villa; history; Buenos Aires; XXth Century.
