Abstract

CREMASCHI, Verónica. Housing in tension: an analysis of the propaganda after the 1944 earthquake in San Juan, Argentina. An. Inst. Arte Am. Investig. Estét. Mario J. Buschiazzo [online]. 2023, vol.53, n.2, e009. ISSN 2362-2024.

The earthquake that struck San Juan on January 15, 1944, resulted decisive for the urban history of the capital city and its surroundings, because it completely destroyed them and led to their reconstruction. In this context of crisis, housing became a central issue for Provincial and National Goverment, since shelters had to be provided for almost all the citizens. Thereby, the hypothesis is that through various discursive and rhetorical strategies, housing was used as a highly symbolic element in some publications, both in propaganda as in contrapropaganda of those times. The aim is to analyze the politics used for housing in different media during the period of the reconstruction of San Juan the decade after the earthquake.

Keywords : San Juan; post earthquake; propaganda; housing; San Juan; 1944-1954.
