This article analyzes the state of the art on the meaning of the school in countries such as Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Colombia from 2000 to 2016. Initially the term meaning is defined from the philosophy and researches are related based on elements common to the meaning of the school. Subsequently, six tendencies are identified in relation to the meaning of the school and to the meaning of this as social and identity space, in school trajectories and social representations, as future expectation and as well as from the loss of meaning.
