Abstract

MORENO, Inés. The Dilemma of EvaluatingContemporary Art. Bol. estét. [online]. 2021, n.54, pp.21-30. ISSN 2408-4417.  http://dx.doi.org/10.36446/be.2021.54.221.

This paper presents the paradoxical situation that is generated in the different forms of evaluation of contemporary art, in the absence of a theory that supports the guiding criteria. Along with it, the proposed hypothesis is that both aesthetic purism and the defence of the autonomy of aesthetic experience have led to the exhaustion of artistic languages in the second half of the 20th century. Finally, the emblematic theory that accompanies contemporary art -George Dickie's institutional theory- is considered as an attempt to explain art that lacks -symptomatically- criteria for the recognition of the appreciation of art.

Keywords : Visual Arts; Aesthetic Purism; Institutionalism; George Dickie.
