Abstract

BRACAMONTE, Lucía. Intermediar para asistir: cooperadoras salesianas y matriculación escolar de niños y jóvenes pobres (Buenos Aires, 1900-1930). Av. Cesor [online]. 2022, vol.19, n.27, pp.6-6. ISSN 1514-3899.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.35305/ac.v19i27.1692.

This paper analyzes the requests and collaborations that the Argentinean Salesian cooperator made for the admission of low income children and youngsters to the schools of the congregation. The objective is to rebuild their intermediary role in the framework of the educational projects that privileged the childhood and youth considered in danger, in order to analyze how it was instrumented, on one side, in relation to the religious, and on the other side, to the elites, the State and the assisted persons. The period of time studied begins with the organization of the salesian cooperator in 1900 in Buenos Aires and finishes at the end of 1920 decade, when it was re-organized in two commissions. The sources used are pieces of correspondence supplemented by regulations, reports and press articles. We say that cooperators impacted on the decisions of religious by interacting not only with them directly but also with elites, with those responsible for the assisted and with officials who also tried to influence over the religious. Besides, we maintain that their help involved not only the circulation of money and goods, but also representations of minority, children and young people, who in most cases were poor or abandoned, orphans, offenders or criminals, both in the country's capital and in the province of Buenos Aires and Patagonia.
