Abstract
CORDOBA, Paula; OLIVA, Camila and GALARZA, Aixa. Suicidal risk and discrimination in adolescents and young people from Mar del Plata. Rev. psicodebate: psicol. cult. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.21, n.2, pp.61-76. Epub Dec 01, 2021. ISSN 2451-6600. http://dx.doi.org/10.18682/pd.v21i2.4595.
The purpose of this research was to study the relationship between suicide risk and perceived discrimination in adolescents and young people from Mar del Plata. The study was descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional with a non-experimental design and quantitative methodology. The sample consisted of 199 adolescents and young people from the city of Mar del Plata. Suicidal Orientations Inventory and a Perceived Discrimination Survey were administered. Data suggested that the correlations between the dimensions of discrimination and those of suicide risk are significant, positive, and the effect sizes are big. These results support the hypothesis that the higher the perception of discrimination, the higher the risk of suicide in the population under study, beyond the specific dimensions of discrimination due to physical features, sexual diversities, or sociocultural and economic aspects. This is in accordance with the studies that assert that an adolescent who suffers discrimination may experience depression, fear, low self-esteem, isolation, and feelings of rejection, which affect their development and daily life, and may favor the emergence of ideations and suicide plans.
