CALERO, Alejandra Daniela; BARREYRO, Juan Pablo; FORMOSO, Jesica  and  INJOQUE-RICLE, Irene. Need for Belonging and Alcohol Consumption in Adolescence. Rev. psicodebate: psicol. cult. soc. [online]. 2022, vol.22, n.2, pp.47-59.  Epub Dec 01, 2022. ISSN 2451-6600.  http://dx.doi.org/10.18682/pd.v22i2.5145.

The objective of this study was to analyze if the need for belonging and fear of rejection are associated with the frequency of alcohol consumption and the amount of alcohol consumed. The sample consisted of 399 adolescents, with a mean age of 15.14 years (SD = 1.86). The inventory of the need for belonging and questionnaire on alcohol consumption was administered. Significant positive correlations were found between the amount of alcohol that adolescents consume, and the need for belonging and the fear of rejection factor, as well as between frequency and fear of rejection. Significant differences were verified between abstinent adolescents and those who consume alcohol moderately, and those who abuse alcohol abusively. Also, it was found that the need for belonging mediates the relationship between gender and alcohol consumption. In conclusion, need for belonging was closely related to alcohol consumption, in particular to fear of rejection.

Keywords : alcohol consumption; need for belong; fear of rejection; adolescents; risk factors.
