Abstract

CASTRO MONTERO, Ángeles. Spain in Argentina: Luis Olariaga and his impressions about spanish immigration. Estud. hist. Esp. [online]. 2019, vol.21, n.2, pp.170-188. ISSN 2469-0961.

Luis Olariaga visited Argentina in 1924 as a guest at an International Congress organized by the Argentine Social Museum, lectured at the University of Buenos Aires, others Argentine institutions and the Spanish community. This trip, financed by the Spanish Cultural Institution, was fruitful in images, reflections and proposals. In Revista de Occidente and in his articles in El Sol, archetypes, prejudices and evaluations on Spanish immigrants in Argentina, their institutions and their notables are noted. Endeavored to reduce the adverse stereotypes of immigrants, he insisted on the construction of the Spanish-American scientific community with a concrete commitment from the Spanish State: his main concern was to present a modern an scientific image of Spain in America.

Keywords : Spanish immigration; Luis Olariaga; Avelino Gutiérrez; Spanish Cultural Institution; El Sol.
