Abstract

PAZ, Silvina. Aportes empíricos y teóricos al estudio del guaraní jopara como una lengua mixta en Formosa. RASAL lingüíst. [online]. 2022, vol.2022, n.1, pp.69-88. ISSN 2618-3455.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.56683/rs221055.

This paper aims to contribute to the debate on mixed languages, by inquiring into the structural and sociohistorical aspects of a Guarani variety spoken in Formosa (Argentina). Based on empirical evidence obtained by the analysis of borrowings in the verbal domain it is argued that the Jopara is a mixed variety, emerging from the historical Guarani-Spanish contact in the region. Among the defining characteristics of Jopara as a mixed language, this study explores and describes the formation of Guarani speaking communities in Formosa, in which the mixture of languages is interpreted as an identity need. At the linguistic level, the structural split in the Guarani verbal lexicon is analysed, which shows Guarani morphology and a high degree of Hispanic verb stems. The degree of relexification and the internal changes in this variety allow it to be considered as a different system from Spanish and Guarani.

Keywords : guarani; Formosa; contact; bilingualism.
