Abstract

VAZQUEZ-LARRUSCAIN, Miguel. Tres generalizaciones sobre la variación verbal del voseo americano. RASAL lingüíst. [online]. 2023, vol.2023, n.1, pp.7-27. ISSN 2618-3455.  http://dx.doi.org/https://doi.org/10.56683/rs231059.

In this paper a system of three basic generalizations is set forth which is able to capture the variation found in the conjugation of the voseo varieties of Spanish. The first generalization highlights the uniformity of every Spanish tense in terms of whether they have voseo or tuteo endings, as well as whether they license diphthongized endings or not. The second generalization states that the properties of the present tense indicative, being the most variable tense, are sufficient to predict the properties of the rest of the tenses in the conjugation at large. Finally, the third generalization indicates a negative correlation between the number of marked TMA features (tense-mood-aspect) in a certain tense and the propensity for that tense to have voseo forms. Summing up, the potentially explosive variation in voseo varieties, if each variable were taken separately, will be reduced to a few voseo prototypes with a short number of subtypes minimally deviant from each of the prototypes.

Keywords : Latin American voseo; Spanish dialectology; morphological inflection; typological parameters.
