The inclusion of non-standard varieties in language classes generates certain reluctance as a result of the negative representations that circulate in society about them. Based on this issue, we review the approaches that are implemented in language classes and present our findings without implying that the teaching of the standard variety form should be displaced. In this article, we argue in favor of incorporating, in language classes, reflections on non-standard linguistic varieties as we believe that they are supplementary in several aspects, for (i) the revaluation of these language varieties and, through this process, also revaluing non-standard uses identities; (ii) the recognition of the political tensions that languages and decisions about languages go through; (iii) the content review (semantics) as a starting point for grammatical analysis (Defagó & Gugliemelli, 2005); (iv) and the understanding regarding the importance of linguistic adequacy. Finally, we propose a short series of activities with the intention of thinking of alternative formats for activities in the language classes, which lead students to conscious and reflective reasoning as opposed to mechanical execution alone.
