Abstract

CAMACHO, Alejandra; RAVAROTTO, Marisol; BENETTI, Nalia  and  ARETA, Alejandra. Changes in functional independence and mobility in children with subacute stroke. A retrospective descriptive study. Argentinian j. respiratory physical therapy [online]. 2023, vol.5, n.2, pp.19-27.  Epub July 01, 2023. ISSN 2618-4095.  http://dx.doi.org/10.58172/ajrpt.v5i2.276.

Objective:

To describe changes in functional independence and mobility in a sample of children with neurological sequelae secondary to subacute stroke.

Materials and method:

This is an observational, descriptive, retrospective, and longitudinal study. Subjects aged 4 to 18 years diagnosed with subacute stroke admitted to a rehabilitation center between February 1, 2005, and February 28, 2023, were included. Functional data were evaluated at admission and discharge with the Functional Independence Measure for Children (WeeFIM) and the Functional Mobility Scale (FMS).

Results:

Thirty-seven subjects were analyzed; of them, 17 (45.9%) had stroke secondary to arteriovenous malformation. When comparing the FMS score at admission and discharge, the differences were statistically significant in the 3 distances evaluated (p<0.001). The median WeeFIM score was 46 (RIQ 36-55) at admission and 86 (RIQ 74-95) at discharge [median change 32.5 (RIQ 19-46) points; p<0.001].

Conclusion:

In this sample of children with subacute stroke, favorable changes were observed in the percentage of functional independence and acquisition of independent walking in short, medium, and long distances.
