Abstract
DOLCE, Pablo; ORELLANO, Ángeles and ROSENDO, Néstor. Persistent symptoms and spirometric values in mild and moderate post COVID-19. A retrospective study. Argentinian j. respiratory physical therapy [online]. 2023, vol.5, n.3, pp.29-36. Epub Nov 01, 2023. ISSN 2618-4095. http://dx.doi.org/10.58172/ajrpt.v5i3.283.
Objective:
To describe persistent symptoms and spirometric values in mild and moderate post COVID-19 subjects.
Materials and methods:
An observational and retrospective study was conducted. Spirometry tests were performed in non-hospitalized subjects during follow-up, and clinical data, including the assessment of symptoms and dyspnea using the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) scale, were collected.
Results:
The persistence of at least one post COVID-19 symptom was identified in 84 (93%) subjects, with headache being the most prevalent, followed by cough and muscle fatigue. Spirometry tests showed that 38 (42.2%) subjects had a restrictive pattern; 37 (41.1%), a normal pattern; and 15 (16.7%), an obstructive pattern. The median perception of dyspnea, according to the mMRC scale, was 2 (IQR 1-3) points. Significant differences were only observed in the mMRC scale when comparing the normal pattern with the restrictive one (p=0.002).
Conclusion:
This study revealed a prevalence of restrictive and normal patterns in spirometry tests. Although no significant differences in symptoms were observed between the groups, the high prevalence of persistent symptoms (93%), such as headache, cough, and muscle fatigue, is notable.
