Abstract

SANCHEZ-MORALES, Ulises; RAMIREZ-FERNANDEZ, Diana María  and  ARGUELLES-GUERRERO, César Alejandro. Dental care of patient with Alzheimer’s disease. Case report clinical cases with whitening. Rev. Asoc. Odontol. Argent. [online]. 2020, vol.108, n.3, pp.138-142.  Epub Dec 30, 2020. ISSN 2683-7226.  http://dx.doi.org/7.

Aim:

To present a case report about the experience during a re root canal treatment on a patient with Alzheimer’s disease.

Clinical case:

A 71-year-old female patient, attend-ed for endodontic re treatment of her lower right canine, previously root filled elsewhere. Difficulties are reported during the procedures due to the carer ’s resistance to stay-ing in the dental office during the treatment, episodes of confusion and uncontrolled movements of the patient, opt-ing for the use of the tell-show-do technique for behavior management, metallic mouth opener, and collimator for X-ray taking. The treatment was carried out successful-ly, and the cooperation of the patient was also achieved.

Conclusions:

It is important to prioritise dental treatment during the early stages of the disease, when cognitive dysfunction still allows cooperation and there is a low risk of bronchoaspiration. Likewise, it is recommended to encourage the carers to remain in the dental office during treatment. The dentist must know the physiological and behavioral changes that arise as a result of this neurological disorder, to provide dental treatment to these patients.
