Abstract

MACCIONI, Laura. A Journey through the denied city: digital magazines and new subjects in Havana at the beginning of the new century. Recial [online]. 2023, vol.14, n.23, pp.19-33.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 2718-658X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53971/2718.658x.v14.n23.41364.

Drawing inspiration from the painting Ciudad negada (2016), by visual artist René Francisco Rodríguez, this study offers an analysis of two digital magazines published in Havana during the first decade of the new century: Cacharro(s) (2003-2005) and 33 and 1/3 (2005-2009). The article examines how these e-zines, pioneers in the realm of virtual literary magazines, subverted the established conditions or rules of subjectivity (Rancière, 1996, p.45), thereby providing space for marginalized voices or those lacking representation in public life. Additionally, the analysis focuses on the strategy of “lightening” the weight of national identity and tradition employed by these magazines to complicate the portrayal of ordinary figures, setting them apart from their predecessors in print media.

Keywords : Cuba; digital magazines; XXI century; new political subjects.
