Abstract

VIERA, Katia. Havana in the 21st Century: a City Read, Generated, and Overflowed. Recial [online]. 2023, vol.14, n.23, pp.220-235.  Epub June 30, 2023. ISSN 2718-658X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.53971/2718.658x.v14.n23.41704.

This paper sets out to investigate the readings, references, patterns and sources of the Cuban literary canon that some Generation Zero narrators have utilized to shape Havana in their works. It is based on the hypothesis that these references and readings are updated, revisited, and deconstructed by this generation as they express their personal relationship with and interpretation of the city. While a group of recent writings produced in Cuba seeks to ignite the archive, many of them still draw nourishment from tradition. Thus, this text dedicates its first part to shed light on the negotiations with the canon, and the second part describes the frameworks established by some 21st-century authors for their cities through experiences, readings, and emotions.

Keywords : Generation Zero; city; canon; Cuban literature.
