Abstract
COLOMBANI, Erica; BEHR, Santiago and BRANDIZI, Laura. Estimacion de precipitaciones extremas a traves de GSMAP y aplicación hidrologica a la crecida del arroyo Telsen, Chubut, Patagonia Argentina. Meteorologica [online]. 2017, vol.42, n.1, pp.53-66. ISSN 1850-468X.
Processing techniques of satellite data could be a source of valuable information for estimating rainfall for large areas and facilitate hydrological modeling in regions where land precipitation data are scarce. The aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of rainfall that occurred during the first days of April 2014 in northern Patagonia and estimate the extraordinary flood of the Telsen stream basin, using Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation data (GSMaP) and data from terrestrial rain gauges. The results of the statistical analyze to compare the observed and estimated rainfalls indicate a very good fit that would allow to use estimated precipitation data at sites that do not have field weather data. Through this technique, mapping the spatial distribution of precipitation would be facilitated. Moreover, this methodology would also allow using estimates of precipitation in hydrological applications, permitting more in-depth analysis about regional issues regarding water resources, even in cases where no measured in situ data are available.
