Abstract

STEIN, Beatriz E. et al. Evaluation of different copper compounds for citrus canker control on lemon in the province of Tucumán, Argentina. Rev. ind. agric. Tucumán [online]. 2014, vol.91, n.2, pp.9-15. ISSN 1851-3018.

Efficacy of copper-based compounds, alone or combined with other products for the control of citrus canker caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) was evaluated during four successive seasons (2002-2006) in a commercial lemon orchard in Alderetes, Tucumán (Argentina). Treatments were applied six times per season, at 28 days intervals since petal fall till February, with a high volume air blast sprayer that delivered 25 l to 30 l per tree. Evaluations were performed visually on all fruits exceeding size 138 (60 mm in diameter) during April, June, and August each year. Citrus canker incidence on fruits was reduced significantly with all treatments as compared to the unsprayed control. The combination of copper oxychloride with spray oil as adherent, mancozeb or disinfectants (quaternary ammonium and peracetic acid), did not improve disease control. Results obtained in this work demonstrate the effectiveness of copper-based compounds in the control of citrus canker on lemons under our conditions. These chemical treatments, along with other measures of an Integrated Pest Management program, allow the production of disease-free fruit with the phytosanitary guarantees required by overseas markets.

Keywords : Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri; copper formulations and rates; canker control; Citrus limon.
