Abstract

SOAJE DE ELIAS, Raquel. Classic Latinity vestiges in Visigothic monastic rules. Scripta Mediaevalia [online]. 2014, vol.7, n.1, pp.63-80. ISSN 1851-8753.

Visigothic monastic rules constitute a documentary corpus of fundamental importance for the study of early monasticism in Hispania. They reflect, among other things, the concern for the ideals of life of its time, partly inherited from several classical treatises, expressing, from deeper aspects linked to morality, to more precise rules regarding the mode of behavior in society. In the early Middle Ages, this concern was echoed by the monastic communities, rescuing elements of traditional Latin customs. In this context, this paper aims to analyze the presence of vestiges of classical Latinity in Visigothic monastic rules, which served as a receptacle for those traditions designed to regulate different aspects of the monk`s life.

Keywords : Monastic rules; Visigoths; Decorum; Urbanitas; Humanitas.
