Abstract

MARTINEZ ZUCCARDI, Soledad. El Centenario de la Independencia y la construcción de un discurso acerca de Tucumán: proyectos y representaciones. Prismas [online]. 2015, vol.19, n.1, pp.67-87. ISSN 1852-0499.

This article studies the way in which the province of Tucumán is represented in the volumes of Tucumán al través de la historia. El Tucumán de los poetas (1916), compilation published as part of the official celebration of the first Centenary of the National Independence of Argentina. These representations can be condensed in four images (the image of a paradisiacal garden, with a magnificent and prodigious nature; of a cradle of freedom and independence, owner of a heroic past of glory; of a province with a brilliant future based on the prosperity of the sugar industry; and of an educated, animated and modern city). The analysis underlines that this almost idyllic discourse about Tucumán presents a strategic character in relation to the ambitious project of modernization led by the so called local "Generation of the Centenary", group which intended to establish the province as an important economic and cultural pole, as well as the center of the Northwest region. This strategic character appears even more clearly if we consider certain aspects which seem to be silenced in the compilation, for they could throw a shadow of doubt over some of the certainties of the project mentioned above.

Keywords : Representations; Modernization; Local Intellectual Elites; Province and Nation.
