Abstract

CAIMARI, Lila. Representation Travels. Prismas [online]. 2022, vol.26, n.2, pp.177-185.  Epub Nov 05, 2022. ISSN 1852-0499.  http://dx.doi.org/10.48160/18520499prismas26.1306.

The article traces the different modalities acquired by the concept of “representation” in Roger Chartier’s work. Following the legacy of Louis Marin, the concept emerges in his work as a key to investigate the symbolic dimension of the social fabric, avoiding vertical dynamics and reconfiguring a disciplinary horizon that, until then, had been dominated by the history of mentalities: uses, in short, that converge in a long-term historiographical project with which Chartier sought to strengthen experimentation with new objects and safeguard the scientific character of history. The article culminates with the decisive reception of his work in Latin American historiography, a reception that, among other effects, allowed strengthening the process of professionalization that the discipline was undergoing in the region.

Keywords : Roger Chartier; Representation; Linguistic Turn; Louis Marin; Cultural and Political History.
