Abstract

MONTENEGRO, Silvia. Ethno-religious configurations of islam: the ‘Alawis and the diasporic recreation of an origin-based particularism. Rev. Mus. Antropol. [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.3, pp.185-198.  Epub Dec 28, 2023. ISSN 1852-060X.  http://dx.doi.org/10.31048/1852.4826.v16.n2.41823.

In the scope of studying the inner diversity of islam in Argentina, this article delves into the meanings of ethno-religiosity among ‘Alawi Muslims and the interplay of different dimensions that contribute to the re-creation in the diaspora of an origin-based particularism. Drawing on fieldwork conducted in locations with ‘Alawi presence, this approach focuses on the singularity of a diasporic ethno-religiosity, highlighting the relationship between dissemination/connectivity, the pivotal significance of two memoryscapes embodied by the village and the shrine, and the local re-creaction of religious authority forms. These dimensions represents arenas in wich the diaspora forge genealogies, linking the present to an imagined past.

Keywords : Alawis; Ethno-religiosity; Particularism; Diaspora.
